During the military occupation of Germany and the postwar rebuilding of Europe, the American Army Corps of Engineers, the newly established French government, and the British Ministry of Defence engaged in one of the most prolonged and successful mine-clearing operations throughout Western Europe.

French soldiers encountered the S-mine during minor probes into the coal-rich German Saar region in September 7–11, 1939, during the Saar Offensive.


1947 Centralia mine disaster

American folksinger Woody Guthrie wrote and recorded a song about the Centralia mine disaster entitled The Dying Miner. Guthrie's recording of the song is now available on the Smithsonian-Folkways recording Struggle (1990).

Andrei Nikolishin

His father, Vasyl Nikolishin, was a victim of Joseph Stalin's Great Purge, and was exiled from Ukraine to a Gulag forced labor coal mine in Vorkuta, the largest center of the camps in European Russia, for a period of 25 years.

Andrew Whipp

He was nominated for a 2006 British Soap Award for Most Spectacular Scene, along with Leah Bracknell, Nick Miles, Ken Farrington, Charlie Kemp and Tony Prescott for an explosion at Home Farm, but lost out to fellow Emmerdale actors, Eden Taylor-Draper and Luke Tittensor for their trapped in a mine shaft scene.

Berlinite

It was first described in 1868 for an occurrence in the Västanå iron mine, Scania, Sweden and named for Nils Johan Berlin (1812–1891) of Lund University.

Bishop Nehru

He chose the his stage name from a combination of Tupac's character in the movie Juice, noting that the character of Bishop inspires him "to go out and get mine, you've got to earn respect" and Nehru is taken from the former prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, who worked closely with legendary peacemaker Gandhi.
