The Safari often saw unheralded cars on the winners ramp and this year was no exception - the Mitsubishi Colt Lancer scored no more points throughout the rest of the season.
Other approaches included the Ford Courier and Mazda B-Series utilities utilising Mitsubishi's 2.6-litre Astron four-cylinder engine, and a proposal to replace Mitsubishi's locally built Colt with a rebadged Toyota Corolla.
It does however point to the usage of quick-charge batteries such as those developed by Toshiba.
