The other company forming Wabtec, MotivePower Industries, can be traced back to 1972 with the formation of a Rail Systems Group by the Morrison Knudsen group; and the purchase of a manufacturing facility in Boise.
The Cartier Railway also acquired from Morrison-Knudsen three Alco C636 demonstrators, which were used during construction of the Mont Wright extension.
The first order (GP40PH-2A) in 1993 consisted of six units, numbered 4145-4150, and were rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen.
Morrison-Knudsen had recently signed a partnership with the larger Utah Construction Company to build dams.
MK was also involved in the construction of rail projects such as the BART extension (M-K also built 80 C2 cars for BART in 1994) and the single track Apoera-Bakhuys railway in Suriname (1976–1977).
MK was also one of the largest passenger railcar rebuilders, based at the original Erie Railroad shop in Hornell, New York, overhauling and rebuilding many New York City Transit (NYCT) subway cars including R26/R28s, R29s, R32s (Phase I & II), some R36 World's Fair cars (pilot program), R42s, R44s, and R46s.
The railroad had previously also made repairs to the desert line from Division, California to Plaster City, California – including two burned trestles which had forced Kyle Railways to quit – and started work on Tunnel Eight by subcontracting Walter H. Barber & Son, Inc. and Morrison-Knudsen until the early 90's.
On 17 Jan 1962, the joint venture team of Morrison-Knudsen, Paul Hardeman, Inc., Perini Corporation, and C.H. Leavell & Co. received the prime contract for construction of hardened, underground launch facilities and 15 launch control centers.
