Born in Snowdonia, North Wales he took his name from a character in Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

In Cardiff, 2008, Mr Duke formed his backing band, known as The Hoodlum Circus, taken from a Hunter S. Thompson book, Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.

The Company was founded by a Mr Duke and a Mr Ockenden who in 1867 sank the first Tubewell to ensure a clean water supply in Littlehampton, England, following an outbreak of Cholera.
In the Indenture of Trust, Mr. Duke specified that he wanted the Endowment to support Duke University, Davidson College, Furman University, Johnson C. Smith University; not-for-profit hospitals and children's homes in the two Carolinas; and rural United Methodist churches in North Carolina, retired pastors, and their surviving families.
