Blum is the eldest of four daughters born to entomologist Murray S. Blum and his wife Nancy Ann Blum, an educator and writer.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Villanova University and an Master's in Business Administration in Marketing and Finance from the New York University Stern School of Business.
In 1992, the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions awarded Klamkin the David Hilbert Award for his contributions to mathematics competitions.
