At the same time, the United States Air Force had decided to deal with the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base by treating it as a sort of reward to which people could be assigned if they deserved a vacation or a punishment for those whose careers were at an end.
In 2000, as buildings were torn down at the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, HGTC claimed the Officers Club and Non-Commissioned Officers Club.
During Operation Desert Storm, aircraft assigned to the 354th initially flew against early-warning radar and Scud missile sites, as well as search-and-rescue missions of downed coalition pilots.
Significant growth didn't happen until after 1956 when Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was reactivated.

In June 1955 Colonel Emmens was assigned to supervise the construction efforts at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, South Carolina, assuming the role of Liaison Officer with both Ninth Air Force and HQ, Tactical Air Command.
