A left-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler, he never achieved any great success, his most significant act was probably to bowl England Test player Richard Blakey in a NatWest Trophy game against Yorkshire in 1989.
He also briefly represented the Hampshire Cricket Board side in the Natwest Trophy, having played 4 seasons of club cricket in England for the Liphook and Ripsley Cricket Club.
In the 1995 NatWest Trophy match against Northamptonshire he had Alan Fordham caught and bowled for 99, although the Dutch still lost by seven wickets.
His best remembered moment, however, may have been for having an on-field confrontation with Robert Croft during a Natwest Trophy semi final against Glamorgan in 1997.
Ilott's brother, Mark played Test cricket for England, while his father, John, umpired NatWest Trophy matches between 1999 and 2003.
It was at Essex where he gained most success although he is perhaps best remembered for hitting the winning boundary in the second day of a Natwest Trophy semi final against Glamorgan in 1997 when play had been suspended the day before due to bad light with Mark Ilott and Robert Croft having an on field confrontation seen on BBC television.
