Originally located on the north shore of Big Sandy Lake, the village of Gaa-mitaawangaagamaag was the western terminus of the Northwest Trail that connected the Mississippi River with the Saint Louis River; Savanna Portage State Park that commemorates this historic trail is located on the northeastern shore.

In July 2003, Full Sail began contract brewing three beers for SABMiller under the almost 150 year-old Henry Weinhard's brand: Henry Weinhard's Hefeweizen, Northwest Trail Blonde Lager, and Amber Light.
Beginning at Chief Mountain Customs on the United States-Canadian border in central Montana, the Pacific Northwest Trail traverses the high mountains and valleys of Glacier National Park, travels across the Flathead River, up the Whitefish Divide, and through the Ten Lakes Scenic Area.
