In 1868 Tibbets subdivided the property into smaller lots and allowed the Oregon Central Railroad to cross the property.
The value of East Portland waterfront property skyrocketed in 1869, when the East-Side Oregon Central Railroad connecting East Portland and Salem was completed.
The West Side Company broke ground in Portland on April 15, 1868, and the East Side Company followed suit the next day in East Portland.
Saint Joseph was named by Ben Holladay, who chose this location as the terminus of the westside line of his Oregon Central Railroad, in order to encourage competition between Lafayette and McMinnville.
