After Ottoman forces under Skanderbeg's command suffered defeat in a battle near Niš in present-day Serbia in 1443, Skanderbeg rushed to Krujë and tricked a Turkish pasha into surrendering the Albanian fortress.

Tringe Smajl Martini Ivezaj 1870 - 1917 (short Tringe Smajli), also known as Yanitza outside Albania, was an Albanian warfare leader from the region of Grudë, within Malësia of then Ottoman Albania, today part of southern Montenegro.
Born in Frashëri village in the District of Përmet, he was part of a family of a declassed Spahi of Ottoman Albania, and the impoverished Bey from Permet.
According to Arshi Pipa, the term Gegë was initially used for confessional denotation, being used in pre-Ottoman Albania by its Orthodox population when referring to their Catholic neighbors.
