3 unusual facts about Parkway


Outer barrier

The Ocean Parkway connects all three causeways and runs the length of the island, while The Fire Island Inlet Bridge continues on the Robert Moses Causeway finding its way to the New York's Fire Island on the Atlantic Ocean.

The Ocean Parkway begins at the southern terminus of the Meadowbrook State Parkway, intersects the south end of the Wantagh State Parkway, and ends just past the southern terminus of the Robert Moses Causeway.

It is accessible from Long Island on its western end by the Meadowbrook Parkway to Merrick, New York, the Loop Parkway to Long Beach, New York and the Wantagh Parkway to Wantagh, New York.


Alfred E. Driscoll

The Driscoll Bridge on the Garden State Parkway across the Raritan River was named in his honor, and a failed planned extension of the New Jersey Turnpike (similar in nature to the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension) would have also borne his name.

Arroyo Seco Parkway

Though the common name used by the public had become "Arroyo Seco Freeway" over the years, it was officially a "Parkway" until November 16, 1954, when the California Highway Commission changed its name to the Pasadena Freeway.

British Columbia Highway 14

In the east, Highway 14 begins at an interchange with the Trans-Canada Highway (Exit 14) in north Langford, proceeding south for 3 km (2 mi) as the Veterans Memorial Parkway through the community of Langford before turning west and continuing through Langford and Metchosin for 22 km (14 mi), also passing by a local hill known as Mount Helmcken, before entering the city of Sooke.

Cabin John Parkway

Each direction of the parkway crosses Cabin John Creek before the roadways come together to pass under the Union Arch Bridge, which carries the Washington Aqueduct and MacArthur Boulevard.

Central Westchester Parkway

The parkway segment cost $1 million (1932 USD) to construct and the ribbon was placed at the location of George Washington's first defensive line in 1776 during the Battle of White Plains.

Commerce, Georgia

Cypress Street Viaduct

After the viaduct was torn down, Cypress Street was renamed Mandela Parkway, in honor of Nelson Mandela, and a landscaped median strip was planted where the viaduct once stood.

County Road 40 is named Follow That Dream Parkway west of US 19/98 after the 1962 Elvis Presley movie that was filmed in Inglis, Yankeetown and the surrounding area.

Georgia State Route 6

It is known as Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway, Jimmy Campbell Parkway, Nathan Dean Parkway, and Wendy Bagwell Parkway in Paulding County; C.H. James Parkway in Cobb County; Thornton Road in Douglas County; and Camp Creek Parkway and honorarily as Tuskegee Airmen Parkway in Fulton County.

Hollis Hills, Queens

The parkway was built by William Kissam Vanderbilt, a descendant of the family that presided over the New York Central Railroad and Western Union.

Korn Krest, Pennsylvania

It is located in the Wyoming Valley between Wilkes-Barre and Nanticoke on the south side of the Sans Souci Parkway, which is a main thoroughfare connecting the two cities and is locally pronounced "San Suey." Hanover Township Area Jr/Sr High School is located in Korn Krest on the former site of Sans Souci Park, an amusement park that closed in 1970 and was first named Hanover Park from 1893 to 1905.

Labor Day Carnival

Many Calypso and Soca songs from Trinidad make reference to the Labor Day Carnival, including "Gunplay on the Eastern Parkway" by Calypso Rose, "Melee (on the Eastern Parkway)" by Maestro, and "Labor Day in Brooklyn" by the Mighty Sparrow.

Little Elm, Texas

Tennessee State Route 374

Construction is complete along the 101st Parkway segment of SR 374, which widened that part of the highway to four lanes and created an overpass with exits that allow traffic to freely flow over Wilma Rudolph Boulevard.

Texas State Highway 130

The 2007 session of the Texas Legislature passed HB 2296, designating SH 130 in Williamson County, Travis, Caldwell and Guadalupe Counties as the "Pickle Parkway" in honor of former United States Congressman J.J. "Jake" Pickle.
