9 unusual facts about Pelagius of Oviedo

Flacinus

A document of 27 May 912 in the Libro de los Testamentos that cites Flacinus is a twelfth-century forgery of the bishop Pelagius, not as it claims of a certain bishop Hermenegild.

Gomelo II

According to a later falsified document of bishop Pelagius of Oviedo, Alfonso III held a council at Oviedo in 899 or 900 and with the approval of a certain "Pope John" (perhaps John VIII was intended) raised Oviedo to metropolitan rank.

Only one document from his episcopate survives, though it was interfered with at a later date by Pelagius of Oviedo.

Oviedo Cathedral

The Cathedral was restored in the 12th century by Archbishop Pelagius of Oviedo, the chronicler.

Pelagius of Oviedo

In the sixteenth century Ambrosio de Morales discovered a manuscript titled "Many Genealogies of the Scripture until Our Lady and Saint Anne", a genealogy of the Virgin Mary and Saint Anne ascribed to Pelagius, in the cathedral library of Oviedo.

It contained several historical texts under the heading "Itacius", after the first of them, the chronicle by Hydatius.

The Chronicon regum Legionensium and the revised chronicle of Sampiro influenced the later authors of the Chronica Adefonsi imperatoris and the Chronica naierensis, and also Lucas de Tuy, Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, and Alfonso X.

These included the Historia Gothorum of Isidore, the Chronica ad Sebastianum, and the Chronicon of Sampiro (which was heavily interpolated, but ultimately truncated).

Uberto Lanfranchi

Three bishops—Pelagius of Oviedo, Diego of León, and Muño of Salamanca—and the abbot of Samos were deposed by the council for having opposed the marriage of Alfonso to Berenguela of Barcelona on grounds of consanguinity.
