After the Polish campaign, as a lieutenant, he was appointed acting aide to General Gardanne, in the embassy of France to Persia (1807–1808); aide to General Armand Charles Guilleminot on his return in 1809; he was secretary of the Committee on Delimitation of Illyria, was promoted to captain (1810), and transferred to the Spanish army.
During Suvorov's Polish campaign of 1794, he commanded a battalion which silenced a Polish battery and took hold of a bridge over the Vistula between Warsaw and its suburb Praga.
The literary and cinematic "Sergeant Steiner" character may be based upon Johann Schwerdfeger (b. 24 November 1914, in Plein bei Wittlich) who soldiered from 1935 to 1937 in Infanterie Regiment 84, and in 1939 was transferred to the Third Company of Infanterie Regiment 186 of the 73rd Infantry Division, at the Polish Campaign's start.
In 1939, he commanded the 10th Army during the polish campaign.As of 1941, he was deputy commander of the Central and Byelorussian fronts and he commanded the 49th Army of the Soviet Union, playing a key role early on during the Battle of Moscow in late 1941.
