Rainforest Foundation Norway was founded in 1989, following the formation of the Rainforest Foundation the same year by Sting and his wife Trudie Styler after the leader of the indigenous Kayapo people of Brazil, Chief Raoni, made a personal request to them that they help his community protect its lands and culture.

In June 2003, Dr. Lim Keng Yaik, Malaysia's Minister of Primary Industries, charged Rainforest Foundation Norway with circulating misleading information about forestry management in Malaysia.

2007: Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg announced at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali that Norway would grant USD 500 million annually for rainforest protection in order to halt climate change.
