Caynham

There have been many owners of the manor, from Saxon and Norman times with the Earl of Murcia, and Ralph de Mortimer who wrote the extract within the Domesday book for Caynham, to the Curtis Dynasty of 1852–1946.

Ralph de Mortimer

He succeeded his elder brother before 23 November 1227 and built Cefnllys and Knucklas castles in 1240.

Ranulph or Ralph de Mortimer (before 1198 to before 6 August 1246) was the second son of Roger de Mortimer and Isabel de Ferrers of Wigmore Castle in Herefordshire.

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Survey when it formed part of the estate of Ralph de Mortimer although evidence of occupation extends back to at least Roman times, as the remains of a temporary marching camp lie near the village.

Wigmore Castle

FitzOsbern was killed in Flanders in 1071, and his son Roger de Breteuil took part in the Revolt of the Earls in 1075; after the Earl's subsequent defeat, William I seized the castle and gave it to another of his supporters, Ranulph de Mortimer (or Ralph de Mortimer).
