3 unusual facts about Restormel Castle

Restormel Castle

Restormel Castle was probably originally built after the Norman conquest of England as a motte and bailey castle around 1100 by Baldwin Fitz Turstin, the local sheriff.

The castle was taken by Sir Richard Grenville, a local member of the gentry who had been the member of Parliament for Fowey before the war.

Sir Richard Grenville, 1st Baronet

Grenville was immortalised in Daphne Du Maurier's 1948 novel The King's General, which has subsequently been adapted into a play, which is to be performed at Restormel Castle, Cornwall in May 2009.

Francis Gregor

Gregor was married twice: first to Catherine, daughter of William Masterman, of Restormel Castle; second, in 1795, to Jane, daughter of William Urquhart, of Craigston, Aberdeenshire.
