It was founded in September 1965 to serve the Catholic population of the surrounding area, including towns such as Rhyl, Rhuddlan, Abergele, Prestatyn, Bodelwyddan, St Asaph, and Denbigh.
Gruffudd landed on Anglesey with an Irish force, and with the assistance of troops provided by the Norman Robert of Rhuddlan first defeated and killed Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon, an ally of Trahaearn who held Llŷn, then defeated Trahaearn himself in the battle of Gwaed Erw in Meirionnydd and gained control of Gwynedd.

Gruffudd then led his forces eastwards to reclaim territories taken over by the Normans, and despite the assistance previously given by Robert of Rhuddlan attacked and destroyed Rhuddlan castle.
According to some genealogies, Seisyll and his son were associated with Rhuddlan, perhaps as lords of its commote in Rhos cantref.
On 30 May 2011, Wales International and Sheffield United player Ched Evans and another person were arrested on suspicion of the sexual assault of a woman in Rhyl, Denbighshire, following an incident at a Premier Inn in Rhuddlan on the same day.
Prior to Norman occupation of lower Gwynedd, the Perfeddwlad, Rhuddlan was the site of a Welsh cantref and served as the seat of government for the Welsh king Gruffydd ap Llywelyn (1007 – August 5, 1063), whose family may have been the traditional Welsh lords of Rhuddlan for generations.

From here the Lords of Rhuddlan commanded the lands of North East Wales (Welsh Perfeddwlad) on behalf of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn (1007 – August 5, 1063), the last ruler of all Wales.
