2 unusual facts about Rose of Allendale

Rose of Allendale

"The Rose of Allendale" is an English song, with words by Charles Jefferys and music by Sidney Nelson, composed in the 1840s.

Because the song has been recorded by Paddy Reilly and Mary Black, many people mistakenly believe the song to be a (traditional) Irish song.

Allendale, Northumberland

The town's name is often conflated with the 1840 ballad Rose of Allendale, sung by Paddy Reilly, The Dubliners and many others, but this common mistake ignores the obvious spelling difference; the Rose of Allandale, i.e. Mary from the first stanza, was from another place.
