State Route 3 is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, running from Route 8, 11 and 27 in Augusta to an intersection with Route 102 in the village of Somesville in the town of Mount Desert, on Mount Desert Island.
Smith Crossroads on Winchester Grade Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 13) is to its west by way of Autumn Acres Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 26), New Hope is to its north by way of Spohr's Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 8), and Duckwall is located to its east on Johnson's Mill Road along the western flanks of Sleepy Creek Mountain.
Route 8 continues through the river valley on the east side of Mount Greylock and enters the town of Adams, where it meets the northern end of Route 116.
In downtown North Adams, Route 8 crosses to the east of the South Branch of the Hoosic River, passes under Route 2 (Mohawk Trail) just south of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, then curves east and then south along St. Anthony Drive and Holden Street, respectively, to intersect the other route.
The RomerĂa of the Virgin of Zapopan consists of a route 8 km in length, from the metropolitan Guadalajara Cathedral, to the Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan.
The highway continues south as Massachusetts Route 8 toward North Adams.
