On 12 September, the SS Kyle found substantial amounts of wreckage from the aircraft, but no trace was ever found of Bertaud, Hill or Payne.
Kyle, part of the Alphabet Fleet, was named in accordance with fleet tradition of the Reid Company of Newfoundland which stated that their ships must bear the name of a Scottish town.
