Uniquely, because Germany had just been reunified, the competition featured four teams instead of the usual two: The previous season's Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal winners, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and SV Werder Bremen, respectively, were joined by their counterparts from the East.
In 1995–96 they reached the first round proper of the UEFA Cup (the last Irish League club to do so), and were beaten by Werder Bremen.
Bebek is considered the best Croatian referee and is the only Croatian referee who supervised two UEFA Champions League group stage matches (Lazio v. Werder Bremen during the 2007–08 season and Bordeaux v. CFR Cluj in the 2008–09 season).

He made his debut on the professional league level on February 22, 1996 in the Bundesliga for SV Werder Bremen when he came on as a 90th minute substitute for Christian Brand in a game against Hansa Rostock.
Among the teams which were believed to have shown interested in signing him at the time were Catania, Genoa, Lazio and Torino of Serie A, Celtic and Rangers of the Scottish Premier League, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga, and Lille of Ligue 1.
Nicknamed Elk due to his stature, he is best known for his spell with Werder Bremen, also having appeared in the 1994 World Cup with Norway.
