San Rafael Swell

Part of the Swell has geographic features that resemble Mars.

In 2002, then-governor Mike Leavitt of Utah proposed the creation of a San Rafael Swell National Monument.

Muddy Creek cuts into the western edge of the Swell, exits at Muddy Creek Gorge, and then flows across the Blue Hills Badlands near Caineville to its confluence with the Fremont River.


USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum

The museum is located near many paleontological and archaeological sites in a region known as Castle Country, notably in the San Rafael Swell and nearby canyons throughout the Book Cliffs area such as Nine Mile Canyon and Range Creek Canyon.
