Prince Alvaro married Carla Parodi-Delfino (Milan, 13 December 1909 – Sanlúcar, 27 July 2000), daughter of Leopoldo Girolamo Parodi-Delfino, Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, and Lucie Henny, on 10 July 1937 at Rome, Italy.
For almost two years he travelled about the Granada, Jeréz de la Frontera and Sanlúcar areas collecting samples of wild and cultivated plants, observing agricultural practices, noting soil characteristics, micro-climates, and the adaptation of the flora to their natural environment.
Her first solo album, Agua y luz, includes six songs by Carlos Sanlúcar, and versions covered by Salif Keita, Quique González, Lila Downs and Luis Pastor.
Another historical departure was that of Ferdinand Magellan on 10 August 1519, who with a fleet of five ships under his command left Seville and traveled down the Guadalquivir to Sanlúcar de Barrameda at its mouth, where they remained more than five weeks.
In 2010, Fundaciónn Eduardo Domínguez Lobato and Círculo de Artesanos, in collaboration with the City Council and the promoters of the idea, grant the first Circumnavigation to Culture and History Awards, being first winners the cities of Sabrosa (birthplace of Ferdinand Magellan in Portugal), Getaria (birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano) and Sanlúcar de Barrameda itself (start and end of the expedition trip).
