In 1976 trade union activist Sheila McKechnie was appointed as the full-time Health and Safety Director of ASTMS.
She was a member of the Students' Representative Council, holding the posts of Secretary and 2nd Junior President.
The charity was established following the death of Sheila McKechnie, herself an influential and well-established campaigner.
