When Sima Shi began abusing his power, and the emperor Cao Mao died under very suspicious circumstances, Chen Tai expressed his deep loyalty to Wei by honouring their deaths through wearing a mourning dress to the court.
However Yang Huiyu (Sima Shi's third wife) persuaded Emperor Wu, as a result Emperor Wu honored Xiahou Hui as an empress posthumously in 266.
She died in 278 at the age of 65 (by East Asian age reckoning) and was buried with honors due an empress, with her husband Sima Shi.
