Royal Pump Rooms

One of the most interesting, although not at the time most famous or notable, parts of the development were the pumps which were manufactured by the engineering giants Boulton and Watt of Smethwick, Birmingham.

The film follows Wigan's quest in carving two statues of American black activist Malcolm X to commemorate his visit to Smethwick, Birmingham in 1965.

Ann George

She was born in Smethwick, and entered show business as a singer appearing in musicals such as The Belle of New York and The Desert Song and featured in the Gilbert and Sullivan show D'Oyly Carte.

Brandhall

Brandhall (along with the rest of the Oldbury borough, and the neighbouring boroughs of Smethwick and Rowley Regis) became part of the County Borough of Warley in 1966, but this arrangement lasted just eight years until Warley merged with West Bromwich to form Sandwell Metropolitan Borough in 1974.

County Borough of Warley

This was united as the civil parish of Warley in 1884, but later divided between the boroughs of Oldbury and Smethwick (Warley Woods).

Gower Branch Canal

It facilitated travel between the Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal and the BCN Old Main Line, without the need for a long detour to Tipton or Smethwick and back.

Kenny Andrews

Andrews was born in Smethwick, Birmingham, and began his sidecar racing career in 1971 as a passenger to John Bottomly, riding a Triumph-engined Norton outfit.

Richard Tangye

This resulted in the 1862 purchase and demolition of Soho-located Smethwick Hall, on the site of which was built the Cornwall Works.

Smethwick West railway station

Reduced levels of local services continued from Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level; with four trains per day from Snow Hill to Langley Green, via Smethwick West, using Class 122 units, nicknamed "bubble cars".

Stour Valley Line

In addition to Birmingham and Wolverhampton, stations were planned at Smethwick, Spon Lane, Oldbury & Bromford Lane, Dudley Port, Tipton, Deepfields & Coseley, and Ettingshall Road & Bilston.

Stourbridge Railway

The OWWR had come under the control of the GWR by this time, and so the GWR constructed a link from Smethwick to Handsworth, which was opened at the same time, to connect it to the GWR's Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level Line.

Teddy Sandford

As a youth he played football for Tantany Athletic, Overend Wesley, Birmingham Carriage Works F.C. and Smethwick Highfield.

Tipton Green

Most of Tipton was incorporated into an expanded West Bromwich borough but the area around the local authority offices, including most of the new Foxyards estate, was incorporated into Dudley, while most of the Tividale area of the town became part of the new Warley borough which was centred on the towns of Oldbury, Smethwick and Rowley Regis.

Tipton Municipal Borough

The dissolution of Tipton Municipal Borough saw the bulk of the authority absorbed into an expanded borough of West Bromwich, while most of the Tividale area of Tipton was absorbed into the new County Borough of Warley (centred on the towns of Oldbury, Smethwick and Rowley Regis) and a small section of the Tipton Green area (including the former council offices in Sedgley Road West) was absorbed into an expanded County Borough of Dudley.

Warley, West Midlands

The name was re-used in 1966 by the creation of the County Borough of Warley, from the merger of Oldbury with Smethwick and Rowley Regis as well as parts of Dudley and Tipton.
