His father, Colonel James M. MacKaye, was a successful attorney and an ardent abolitionist; Steele's mother died when he was young.

MacKaye married Jeannie Spring, the daughter of Marcus Spring, during the time he was teaching art at Marcus Spring's Eagleswood Military Academy, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.


Percy MacKaye

He was the son of actor, impresario and theatrical technology innovator Steele MacKaye, and brother of philosopher James MacKaye and conservationist Benton MacKaye.
