The Invasion of Lae-Salamaua, called Operation SR by the Japanese, was an operation by Imperial Japanese forces to occupy the Salamaua-Lae area in the Territory of New Guinea 8–13 March 1942 during the Pacific campaign of World War II.
Australian troops and vessels were subsequently dispatched to occupy Germany's other territories including the New Guinea mainland, New Ireland, the Admiralty Islands, the Western Islands, Bougainville, and the German Solomons.

In 1928 and 1929 Ryrie acted as the Australian accredited representative before the League's Permanent Mandates Commission for the annual examinations of the Australian administration of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea.
In 1941 he became the Commandant of Toyohashi Reserve Officers' Cadet School before becoming the General Officer Commanding the South Seas Detachment in New Guinea.
The tanks were used to lay aerial smoke screens in combat during the airdrop of the US Army's 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment paratroopers at Nadzab, New Guinea in 1943.
Clarke enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942, and was recorded as missing in operations, presumed dead, near Tadji, New Guinea, in 1945.
