After 1977 Enerģija failed to win any more league titles but in 1982 it won its first and final Latvian Cup by beating Torpedo Rīga 2:1 in the final match.
From 1973 to 1991 it was a middle class team that hardly could compete with clubs like Torpedo Rīga, Elektrons Rīga, Enerģija Rīga, Ķīmiķis Daugavpils and VEF Rīga.
Another team under the name of Daugava Rīga appeared in 1996 but it can't be really considered a successor to the "original" Daugava team as it came to existence in the form of a name change to former Torpedo Rīga, but it also went bankrupt in 2000.
After the club which was in financial trouble was merged with another struggling Riga side - Daugava Rīga and was renamed to PFK Daugava.
After the season because of financial difficulties Daugava gave up its place in Virslīga and started the 1999 season in 1. liga and nearly half of its players joined the newly founded FK Rīga.

In 1997 it was unlikely that Daugava could repeat the previous year achievements, as the club ran into serious financial difficulties which were partly solved by selling the club's best player Miholaps to Skonto FC.
