3 unusual facts about Transitional kindergarten

Transitional kindergarten

In Jan. 2012, California Gov. Jerry Brown released his budget proposal for the next fiscal year calling for the elimination of transitional kindergarten funding.

In California, the grade was created by the Kindergarten Readiness Act (SB 1381), which was authored by Senator Joseph Simitian and Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, and signed into law in 2010 by Gov. Schwarzenegger.

As this is only a proposal, and the Kindergarten Readiness Act is law, the California Department of Education and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and child advocates across the state have called on school districts to move forward with current law and continue plans to implement transitional kindergarten.
