The 18th century brought the first industrial development for the area when the Sandbed Wheel of the Sandbed Tilt Company was constructed on the Don just upstream from Hillfoot Bridge.
In 1802, Homfray commissioned engineer Richard Trevithick to build built one of his high pressure steam engines to drive a hammer at the Penydarren Ironworks.
John Hoult had a paper mill which was later converted into a steel tilt and run by the Sanderson Bros firm.
