It was first known as the Sabah Times when it was founded in 1949 by Donald Stephens.
Later that same year, Tun Fuad Stephens together with Harris Salleh formed the new political party BERJAYA.

In 1973, Fuad Stephens was appointed as the governor of Sabah, known as the Yang di-Pertua Negara (the post was later known as Yang di-Pertua Negeri).

In the afternoon following the accident, Deputy Chief Minister Harris Salleh was sworn in as the sixth Chief Minister of Sabah was United Sabah National Organization (USNO) secretary-general quit the party and teamed up with United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) originally founded by the first Chief Minister of Sabah, Tun Fuad Stephens in August 1961 to create a new party called BERJAYA In 1975.
This new UPKO has no relation with the original United Pasokmomogun Kadazan Organisation (also known by the acronym UPKO), which was created in May 1964 after being renamed from United Kadazan National Organisation (UNKO), originally founded by the first Chief Minister of Sabah, Tun Fuad Stephens in August 1961.
