Twelve Oaks Mall was developed by A. Alfred Taubman and was completed and opened on August 3, 1977, anchored by Hudson's, JCPenney and Sears; the mall was designed by Victor Gruen and Richard Prince.

The mall is one of four super-regional Taubman malls built in the Detroit metro area in the 1970s, the other three being Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor (1973), Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights (1976) and Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi (1977).
The Town Center is proximate to major malls in the area by freeway including, Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Somerset Collection in Troy, and Northland Center in Southfield.
