unusual facts about U.S. Route 74



Lilesville, North Carolina

Steven Spielberg filmed The Color Purple mostly in Lilesville, and a large white farmhouse (the James Bennett Plantation, which is an old farmhouse located a few miles off Highway 74) was used extensively as the main exterior location in that film.

North Carolina Highway 274

Established in 1930 as a new primary routing, from NC 27 to US 74/NC 20 (now NC 161), in Bessemer City.

North Carolina Highway 275

Established in 1930 as a new primary routing, from US 74/NC 20 (now NC 274), near Bessemer City, to NC 27, in Stanley; the route has changed little since.

North Carolina Highway 279

North Carolina Highway 277 (NC 277) was established in 1931 as a new primary routing, it connected US 74/NC 20, in Gastonia, to NC 150, in Cherryville.

Whiteville, North Carolina

Although the railroad tracks leading from west of town toward Lake Waccamaw, have long been disconnected, Whiteville is served by the Columbus County Municipal Airport and several highways, which include U.S. Route 74, U.S. Route 76, U.S. Route 701, North Carolina Highway 130, and North Carolina Highway 131.
