The station is located 72.8 rail kilometers from the southern terminus of the Minobu Line at Fuji Station.
A new building near Ueno Station was completed in Ueno, Tokyo in 2005 to house the NewGin marketing department, the headquarters of NewGin Hanbai, and the Ueno offices of NewGin Advance.

17 10-car sets (101 to 117) and 19 5-car sets (121 to 139) based at Matsudo Depot for use on Jōban Line services between Ueno and Toride, and also Narita Line services to Narita, replacing the earlier 103 series fleet.
Once a great complex, it used to occupy the entire heights north and east of Shinobazu Pond and the plains where Ueno Station now stands.
The crash occurred about 350 meters east of Mikawashima Station when an Ueno-bound passenger train (train number 2000H) crashed into the wreckage of a crash between a Toride-bound passenger train (2117H) and a Mito-bound freight train (number 287) as well as a crowd of evacuating passengers from 2117H.
