He is perhaps best known for his role in the 1950s TV series The Adventures of Robin Hood, in which he played the malevolent Sheriff of Nottingham opposite Richard Greene's Robin Hood.
He served as the Lord Mayor of Nottingham in 2003/04, and was Sheriff of Nottingham for two years from 1991.

Folklore has it that it was in the Market Square where outlaw Robin Hood took advantage of an amnesty and won the coveted silver arrow in a contest devised by the Sheriff of Nottingham.
