The church was proposed in 1814 to celebrate the return of the King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia to the crown after the defeat of Napoleon.
From 1792 to 1796, Aosta's father had taken an active part in the struggle of the old powers against the French Revolutionary forces, but were defeated and forced to make peace.

In 1812 Francis married his niece the Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy, who was the daughter of King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia and his sister Archduchess Maria Teresa of Austria-Este.
