2 unusual facts about Volt-ampere reactive

Volt-ampere reactive

If the reactive power is too low, inductive loads such as transformers will be unable to maintain voltages necessary for the generation of electromagnetic fields, leading to a "Voltage collapses" that create blackouts .

The term var was proposed by the Romanian electrical engineer Constantin Budeanu and introduced in 1930 by the IEC in Stockholm, which has adopted it as the unit for reactive power.

Åke Hodell

One of his visual artworks, the piece "220 Volt Buddha", was use as the album cover of Swedish heavy metal band At the Gates' 1993 album With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness.

Boiling vessel

It runs off the 24 Volt electrical system of the vehicle and is manufactured by Electrothermal Engineering Ltd in Rochford, Essex.

Computer speaker

There are also USB speakers which are powered from the 5 volts at 500 milliamps provided by the USB port, allowing about 2.5 watts of output power.

Devil's Gate-Weber Hydroelectric Power Plant

The main room in the powerhouse accommodates a Pelton wheel turbine and a 2300 volt generator made by Western Electric, together with a small 125VDC exciter generator.

Eijsden railway station

A problem with this is the fact that the overhead lines at the railway station carry 3kV direct current, like the Belgian railway network, whereas the Dutch railway network carries 1.5kV.

Extra-low voltage

The International Electrotechnical Commission and its member organizations define an ELV circuit as one in which the electrical potential of any conductor against earth (ground) is not more than either 25 volts RMS (35 volts peak) for alternating current, or ripple-free 60 volts for direct current under dry conditions.

Ferranti effect

It was first observed during the installation of underground cables in Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti's 10,000 volt distribution system in 1887.

GABA receptor

The increased chloride conductance drives the membrane potential towards the reversal potential of the Cl¯ ion which is about –65 mV in neurons, inhibiting the firing of new action potentials.

Hauppauge MediaMVP

The rear of the MediaMVP unit has a plug for 6 VDC power, an Ethernet port, and in the US edition, S-Video out, composite video out, and stereo audio out, while the European edition has instead a single "SCART out" connector, offering additional RGB output possibilities, and bundles a SCART lead with 2 extra stereo audio cables with female RCA connectors coming out of one of the plugs.

NZR FM guards van

These vans were fitted with either a small platform-mounted generator to supply 240 V power, or a larger generator in one of the LM modules to supply the 240 V and also power for the air conditioning.

Old Caloundra Light

The lighthouse's last active power source was a 500 Watt 110 Volt Philips lamp, fed by the Mains electricity.

Optical power meter

The accuracy of most primary reference standards (e.g. Weight, Time, Length, Volt etc.) is known to a high accuracy, typically of the order of 1 part in a billion.

Piaggio Xevo

The front shield area, besides the odometer, trip computer and tachometer, provides further space to place small items and is also equipped with a 12 volt plug to use a GPS, or recharge a mobile phone.

Robert Krampf

He put together a traveling, high voltage electricity show, centered on a one million volt Tesla coil.

SNCF TGV Sud-Est

Currently there are 107 passenger sets operating, of which nine are tri-current (25 kV 50-60 Hz AC - French lignes à grande vitesse, 1500 V DC - French lignes classiques, 15 kV 16⅔ Hz AC - Switzerland) and the rest bi-current (25 kV 50–60 Hz AC, 1500 V DC).

Stockholm metro

The Stockholm metro runs electrically using a third rail with a nominal operating voltage of 650 V DC on line 13,14, 17, 18 and 19,and 750 V DC on the line 10 and 11.

SUGAR Volt

SUGAR Volt is a hybrid aircraft concept proposed by a team led by Boeing Research & Technology, a division of Boeing.

The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads

"Come to Me", Redding's fourth Volt single, was written by Cropper and Phil Walden and became the second song after the Volt session not to feature a horn section.

Traxxas

Differences include larger fan cooled (the water cooling accessory is still available) "Titan" 21 turn 550 sized brushed motors, a new water-cooled 14.4 volt EVX Marine (instead of the land EVX's air cooling) ESC, Traxxas' "TQ" pistol grip transmitter, and a new sealed, watertight electronics box.

It is powered by one water-cooled "Stinger" 20 turn 540 sized brushed motor and an air-cooled (with heat sink) Nautica 8.4 volt ESC.

In 2007 the Villain EX received a new water-cooled 14.4 volt EVX-2 Marine ESC (not to be confused with the air-cooled 16.8 volt EVX-2 Waterproof ESC used on Traxxas land vehicles) featuring Traxxas high current battery connectors.

UIC 568

This cable carries single-phase electric power at 1500 volts AC, 50 Hz (with the tracks as the ground connection), supplied from the locomotive, or in some cases a carriage with a generator.

Vladimír List

His was successful in effort to standardize voltages for transmission lines in Czechoslovakia in 1919 (220/380V for low voltage and 22kV/100kV for high-voltage lines) and power plug sockets.

Voltage spike

While generally referred to as a voltage spike, the phenomenon in question is actually an energy spike, in that it is measured not in volts but in joules; a transient response defined by a mathematical product of voltage, current, and time.

VU meter

The mass of the needle causes a relatively slow response, which in effect integrates the signal, with a rise time of 300 ms. 0 VU is equal to +4 dBu, or 1.228 volts RMS across a 600 ohm load.
