The mine was closed in 1964 when the supply of accessible coal had been exhausted: In 2010 a memorial pithead designed by Luke Perry was erected to commemorate the village's mining heritage.

Across the road from Oak Park is a Fitness First gym, and several shops including a Tesco Express, a Co-Operative Supermarket opening in 2012 (this had been delayed until Spring 2013), a fish and chip shop, newsagents and more recently an Indian restaurant.
