On Saturday 7 May 1560, Wynter waited for a signal to sail up the Water of Leith and land 500 men on the quayside called the Shore, but the signal never came as the English assault on the walls had failed.

The school stands on the banks of the Water of Leith, and serves children from the areas of Balerno, Kirknewton and Ratho, and also hosts pupils from a variety of areas outside the catchment area such as Currie, East Calder, Mid Calder and Edinburgh.
Mill lades serving the mills led from the Water of Leith at a point just north of Stockbridge, through the area and on to Canonmills Loch at Canonmills.
It was known as the "Water of Leith Village" and was a successful grain milling hamlet for more than 800 years.
