Birds that visit the reserve during the winter include cranes, goldeneyes, shovelers and teals, while bitterns, marsh harriers, pochards, water rails and Cetti’s warblers stay for most of the year.
The Ibiza Rail was a relative of the extant Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) and may actually be derived from this species, but was a bit smaller and stouter, had shorter and more robust hind limbs and shorter wings, with probably reduced its flight capability.
The trackbed from Boston to Lincoln is now part of National Cycle Route 1, and is also known as The Water Rail way, a punning reference to the route and the bird.

The Common Snipe, Little Bittern, White and Black Stork, Water Rail, Osprey, Great Reed Warbler and many duck species being among the most endangered ones.
A subspecies of Lewin's Rail, listed as Lewin's Water Rail (Rallus pectoralis clelandi), is on Western Australia's Wildlife Conservation (Specially Protected Fauna) Notice 2008 Schedule 2 — Fauna presumed to be extinct under the WA Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.
