Boris Grebenshikov (mantra), Djivan Gasparyan (duduk) and the world-known percussion player and Grammy-award-winner Evelyn Glennie (who worked with Björk) participated in the recording of Premonitions of the Shooting Star - one of recent joint creations of duo Zikr and sound producer Andrei Samsonov.
The solo is played on an Armenian woodwind instrument, called duduk — a first in pop music history — played by Venezuelan born, world winds specialist & multi-instrumentalist Pedro Eustache.
on BMG/RCA Records, and featured classic funk samples from Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, and others layered with the unprecedented use of live twelve-string folk guitars, performed by John M. Falasz III, live jazz bass, traditional frat stepping or stomp, harmonica solos (Rags Murtagh aka Rags Murtaugh), and other unique organic instruments, including the haunting Armenian Duduk as performed by Djivan Gasparyan (Gladiator).
The Tarhu was inspired by several string instruments including the Turkish Tanbur, the Erhu, the Kamancha, the North Indian Vina or Bin, the Double Bass, and the Duduk (a double-reed wind instrument).
The duduk recording is actually an excerpt from a song titled "The Wind Subsides," originally recorded for a collection of Armenian music released by Radio France's Ocora label.
