3 unusual facts about late Jurassic

Evaniidae

The fossil record, in particular from fossil amber, is quite comprehensive, with about 10 genera and twice as many species known from the Late Jurassic up to a few million years ago.

Geology of Fujian

The Zhejiang-Fujian-Guandong volcanic rocks are mostly rhyolite and dacite rich in potassium, from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous.

Portland Group

Portland Group or Portlandian, a series of rock strata from the Late Jurassic of southern England

Coeluridae

In 2003, O.W.M. Rauhut, using a cladistic analysis, found Coeluridae to include Coelurus (Late Jurassic, North America), Compsognathus (Late Jurassic, Europe), Sinosauropteryx (Early Cretaceous, Asia) and an unnamed Compsognathus-like form (Early Cretaceous, South America; this dinosaur has since been placed in the new genus Mirischia).

Compsognathidae

In 2003, O.W.M. Rauhut redefined the family Coeluridae to include Coelurus (Late Jurassic, North America), Compsognathus (Late Jurassic, Europe), Sinosauropteryx (Early Cretaceous, Asia) and an unnamed Compsognathus-like form (Early Cretaceous, South America; this dinosaur has since been placed in the new genus Mirischia).

Cyatheaceae

They are also very ancient plants, appearing in the fossil record in the late Jurassic, though the modern genera likely appeared in the Cenozoic.

Juratyrant

The specimen was discovered in strata of the Kimmeridge Clay dating from the Tithonian, the final stage of the Late Jurassic, and belonging to the Pectinatites pectinatus ammonite zone, indicating the fossil is between 149.3 and 149 million years old.

Aegirosaurus

In addition to its late Jurassic occurrence, Aegirosaurus has recently been discovered from the late Valanginian (Early Cretaceous) of Southeastern France (Laux-Montaux, department of Drôme; Vocontian Basin), the first diagnostic ichthyosaur recorded from the Valanginian.

Brora

The white sandstone in the Clynelish quarry belongs to the Brora Formation, of the Callovian and Oxfordian stages (formerly Middle Oolite) of the Mid-Late Jurassic.

Chungkingosaurus

Chungkingosaurus, meaning "Chongqing Lizard", is a genus of dinosaur from the Late Jurassic-age Upper Shaximiao Formation in what is now China.

Claino con Osteno

Near Osteno there is a rare site with numerous late-Jurassic fossils characterized by integral fossilization, including the Squaloraja polyspondyla.

Dinheirosaurus

Its remains were found in the upper section (Kimmeridgian) of the Late Jurassic strata of the Camadas de Alcobaça Formation located in central-western Portugal at Porto Dinheiro, Lourinhã.

Drescheratherium

Drescheratherium is an extinct genus of mammal from the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) Camadas de Guimarota of Leiria, Portugal.

Dsungaripterus

In 1980 Peter Galton renamed Pterodactylus brancai (Reck 1931), a form from a late Jurassic African formation, into Dsungaripterus brancai, but the identification is now commonly rejected.

Hambleton Hills

The hills are made up of rocks of middle and late Jurassic age with the hard Corallian Limestone forming the cap at the highest points.

M. potens

Metriorhynchus potens, an extinct Late Jurassic metriorhynchid crocodile species

Molteno, Eastern Cape

The rocks preserve a record of gradual desertification over millions of years, starting from the Upper Triassic when the area was a warm swampland, and continuing into the late Jurassic when the region had become a desert.

Neptunidraco

This specimen had been provisionally referred to an unnamed species of Late Jurassic Metriorhynchus or Geosaurus.

Northern Croatian Littoral

Foothills of mountains forming the northeast boundary of the region, as well as islands in the Kvarner Gulf, are a part of the Dinaric Alps, linked to a Late Jurassic to recent times fold and thrust belt, itself part of the Alpine orogeny, extending southeast from the southern Alps.

Nqwebasaurus

Nqwebasaurus (pronounced: nnkweb-ah-sawr-us; in fact, "nq" is a nasal postalveolar click ŋǃ) is the name given to a genus of dinosaur sometime between the Tithonian to Valanginian (Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous).

P. potens

Purranisaurus potens, an extinct Late Jurassic metriorhynchid crocodile species

Sevier orogeny

Mountainous terrain of the region is a part of the Dinaric Alps, linked to a Late Jurassic to recent times fold and thrust belt, itself part of the Alpine orogeny, extending southeast from the southern Alps.

Werner Janensch

They recovered an enormous quantity of fossils of late Jurassic period dinosaurs, including several complete Brachiosaurus skeletons, then the largest animal ever known.
