After Muhammad Shah was attacked & deposed by Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1748 young Prince Anwer Ali then about 17 & half year old escaped to his grand Aunt Princess Jahanarra & hid in a place in Arrah, Bihar which was infested with bears.

However, during the Third battle of Panipat which was held on 14 January 1761, he was responsible for certain decisions which were partially responsible for the defeat of the Marathas against Ahmad Shah Abdali.

He was placed on the Mughal throne in December 1759 by Ghazi ud-Din Khan Feroze Jung III but subsequently deposed by the Afghan confederation (Rohillas and Ahmad Shah Abdali) and Nawab of Oudh Shuja-ud-Daula in 1760 in recognition of Shah Alam II as the rightful heir to the throne who was in exile at Allahabad.
