In the 20th century the Belgian academy at Rome carried out excavations at the site, under the direction of Joseph Mertens.
Following his defeat, Bituitus was taken prisoner and sent to Rome, where he was sentenced by the senate to exile in Alba Fucens, one of three foreign kings known to have been held there.
Joseph Mertens (17 January 1921 at Tienen – 1 July 2007 at Wezembeek, Belgium) was an accomplished 20th century Belgian archaeologist, known for his excavations of Alba Fucens and Herdonia.
