He finished in 1862 and began studying chemistry in Göttingen in Wöhler's laboratory, then supervised by Friedrich Konrad Beilstein and Rudolph Fittig.
Votoček studied at the Czech Institute of Technology later in Mulhouse and received his PhD with Bernhard Tollens at the University of Göttingen for his chemistry of sugar.
The Tollens’ test for pentoses relies on reaction of the furfural with phloroglucinol to produce a colored compound with high molar absorptivity.
It was first synthesized in 1884 by Hölzer, who was working with Bernhard Tollens.
