Following his retirement from active service, he served as Minister of National Defence (1955–1956) under Edgar Faure and as Minister of Overseas Departments and Territories (1966–1968) under Georges Pompidou.

Alain Marleix began his political career as a vice-representative for Georges Pompidou in the Assembléee Nationale, who was then representative for Saint-Flour in the Cantal.

The building was designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers (it is said that Georges Pompidou didn't approve of the choice of the jury who picked up Piano and Rogers, and that he would have preferred a more classic architecture) and the choice of artwork for the Centre was based largely of her knowledge of her husband's tastes.
