It is currently threatened by hurricanes, such as Hurricane Luis and Hurricane Georges, flooding, drought, and inbreeding due to low genetic diversity.
After being closed and abandoned in the 1960s, the hotel was restored in the early 1990s after it underwent massive renovations due to heavy damage caused by Hurricane Georges in 1998.
The area grew to become a well known area for great and historic seafood restaurants, including Brunings which opened in 1859 and operated nearly continuously—damage from Hurricane Georges prompted a move to a nearby building somewhat better sheltered from storm surge, but it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005 along with most other buildings in the area.

In this function, the aircraft have been deployed to Kosovo to evacuate refugees, to the Caribbean and Central America to provide humanitarian aid after the hurricanes Luis, Georges and Mitch and to various countries in Africa and Asia to provide development aid.
The destructive force of these phenomena can be enormous - in 1998 Hurricane Georges caused economic losses estimated at US$2,193 (14 percent of GNI), and 235 deaths.
