Franz Gareis (1775–1803), a painter, born at Marienthal, studied at Dresden under Casanova.
He started to study painting in very early years at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Giovanni Battista Casanova, but changed to architecture in 1791.
After the death of Charles François Hutin, in 1776, he was made, together with Giovanni Battista Casanova, alternate director of the Academy and on Casanova's death in 1795, the sole director.
