His father made him Lieutenant General of the Kingdom of Naples in 1507, to replace Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba.
He presided over his father’s funeral in 1512, at which Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, known as "The Great Captain", attended, and Fernández de Córdoba symbolically offered his weapons to Saint James the Great (Santiago) at the funeral.
At the end of the battle, he was knighted by the Spanish potestà (chief magistrate) Consalvo di Cordoba.
He was made the Viceroy of Naples in 1495 by king Charles VIII of France after the conquest, losing it that same year to an allied Neapolitan/Spanish army commanded by Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba.
